About this Trail
Angels Landing received its name in 1916 when a group passing through the canyon commented that only an angel could land on top of it. It ascends 1,500 feet over a distance of 2.5 miles to the slickrock summit of the narrow spine of a geological fin, ringed on three sides by the Virgin River far below with amazing views in both directions up and down the canyon. Fixed chains help you reach the summit of this highly exposed rock formation but no technical climbing is required. To reach the very top you must climb along the narrow ridge that has dizzying drop-offs on both sides—nearly a 1,200 foot drop on one side, and over 800 feet down on the other.
Begining at the Grotto Trailhead, cross a hiker's bridge over the Virgin River and follow the paved West Rim Trail trail north and up the west side of the canyon. After a steep mile of uphill climbing you reach Refrigerator Canyon, a hanging side canyon where temperatures always remain cool due to steep sides that block out most of the sunlight. You then reach Walter's Wiggles -- a series of 21 sharp switchbacks named for the first superintendent of Zion Walter Reusch, who oversaw the completion of the trail.
The final part of this hike is scariest but also the most fun -- you will be walking on the narrow spine of the mountain and climbing almost 500 more feet in elevation. It feels like the top of the world. Chains, guardrails, and stone steps are there to assist you -- but the birds flying at eye level can be intimidating to those with a fear of heights.
