Say No to Tar Sands

Summary: Right now, while our whole nation is working together to move into a clean energy economy, a stealth dirty oil mega project is sneaking across our border. It’s called the Canadian oil sands, a.k.a. Alberta tar sands, and it's quietly making its way into our country, pipeline by pipeline, refinery by refinery, permit by permit. Yet it is a single, massive project planned and executed by Big Oil and their allies in Canada’s government. Help us tell them "thanks, but no thanks."

How You Can Help

Attend a Candlelight Vigil for a Responsible Canada. Wednesday, March 7th, people around the world will attend candlelight vigils at Canadian embassies to take a stand against the destruction of tar sands.

The Washington Post reports that President Obama will deny the Keystone XL Pipeline permit this afternoon. It's not over yet -- the president will allow Transcanada to reapply after it develops an alternate route. We've won round 2, but no doubt there will be more to come.

It's time for Br'er Rabbit / enviro org.s to put a full-page ad in the WPost and NYTimes to rebut the pipeline-more-jobs lie. This is the time to respond to what the following news item reports, and brace Prez Obama to veto the TeaPartyHouse's evil link of tar sands to the payroll tax cut. TransCanada bets expansion plan will help Keystone By Jeffrey Jones CALGARY, Alberta | Thu Dec 15, 2011 2:24pm EST (Reuters) - Buoyed by renewed pledges of customer support, TransCanada Corp said on Thursday it not only wants to proceed with its stalled Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL oil pipeline but to undertake a $600 million expansion and extension. The company is betting its proposed expansion of the original $7 billion plan to carry Alberta oil sands crude to the Gulf Coast will hammer home Keystone's economic benefits to politicians and trump the environmental worries that have prompted a lengthy delay in its U.S. approval process. TransCanada said shippers for Keystone XL, target of vocal protests by green groups and Hollywood celebrities for much of 2011, have backed a 19 percent increase in capacity as well as plans to build an extension to Houston-area refineries.

On Thurs 27th McKibben emailed re this: https://act.350.org/donate/tar_sands/ . It's a way to donate to expenses of chartering buses & making signs etc for Nov 6th. I'll donate to it (within my means) unless I hear that Sierra Club has set up a way to specifically donate to such expenses.
