Wildlands and Wilderness

Summary: The goal of the Wildlands Team is to protect wild places in America.

The Wildlands and Wilderness Team (WWT) is committed to the permanent protection of our public land resources through wilderness and other protective designations.
The WWT educates Sierra Club members, supporters, and the general public about specific actions they can take to preserve, protect, and restore wilderness areas and resilient ecosystems.

Our Projects

TRAINING FOR WILDERNESS ACTIVISTS(NEW!)
The WWT has sponsored face-to-face training for wilderness activists. You can see the introduction below, and the first four sections here.

WILDLANDS AND WILDERNESS LEGISLATION
We track legislation affecting Wildlands and Wilderness across the nation. The WWT advises chapters as proposals are developed and recommends to the Sierra Club Board specific positions on legislation when it is introduced. Here is a list of legislation the Sierra Club is following: Wildlands Campaigns .

LOBBY WEEKS
The WWT has led two DC lobby weeks in 2011. You can learn more at Lobby Week We also had a 2012 Lobby Week. You can learn more at the Blog recently posted by Clayton Daughenbaugh on the right of this page.

BLM ROADLESS AREAS
A "BLM Sub-Team" has been established to increase protection for "roadless" areas on BLM lands. Though there is no formal BLM "roadless" designation the WWT supports efforts to identify and protect those lands. Consistent with the Sierra Club Energy Policy and its Resilient Habitats Campaign, the WWT seeks to protect roadless areas from development project. Join The BLM Wildlands effort at BLM Wildlands

50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE WILDERNESS ACT
It's coming up in 2014 and planning is already underway for a big celebration! A special sub-team has been set-up for this purpose. To take part contact vicky.hoover@sierraclub.org or Alan Carlton at carltonal@yahoo.com. Click the title above to go to the 50th Anniversary website.
