Sierra Club Water Sentinels

Summary: Sierra Club Water Sentinels are the first line of defense of America's waters. Water Sentinels work to protect, improve and restore our waters by fostering alliances to promote water quality monitoring, public education and citizen action.

We live on the water planet. All living things, our weather, the seasons and our climate are dependent upon water. However, water is a finite resource with only about one percent of the world's water actually being available for human consumption. Water pollution and overuse are threatening both the quality and quantity of our water resources at an alarming rate. Join us and find out how you can help protect your waterways!

How You Can Help

The Sierra Club's Water Sentinels Program works to inform and empower citizens to monitor, protect, and improve their local waterways. We organize river and stream cleanups, train citizens to test their local waterways for harmful substances, provide environmental education and outdoor activities for children, organize fly-fishing and water-rafting trips, and more! The Ohio River Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) is considering an application by PPG Industries to allow them to continue to discharge mercury into the Ohio River. PPG is the largest discharger of mercury in the United States. Over 800 miles of the Oho River are contaminated with mercury. Please send an email to ORSANCO telling them that you do not support this application by PPG to continue to allow them to discharge mercury into the Ohio River. That is all you need to say.
