Zero Waste is a design principle for the 21st century; Producer Responsibility Recycling is the means for achieving a deep transformation of wasteful production and consumption. We aim to lead the transition from traditional end-of-pipe waste "diversion" programs provided by local governments to "cradle to cradle" recycling systems designed, financed, and managed by producers, in order to drive improvements in product design, stimulate local economies and reduce climate change impacts of transportation- and energy-intensive product chains. Phasing out land-filling and incinerating discarded resources is prerequisite to Zero Waste; hence the committee also coordinates Club work on waste disposal issues. The Sierra Club's policy for reducing waste is based on Zero Waste

Zero Waste Rochester

Summary: Presently, we are working on increasing recycling, especially all plastics, and helping our region to find a place for everything they don’t want—except the landfills.

Few environmental issues get the wholesale respect of all sectors of society—environmental groups, municipalities, politicians, business, and the average citizen—as recycling.

What’s not to like? With a slight change in your daily habits you and your family or the small business down the street could be having a monumental effect on making our environment sustainable. Imagine taking everything we potentially throw away—steel, iron, paper, cardboard, computers, batteries, appliances, even household scraps—and reusing everything. I mean everything, so that nothing gets wasted.

Here are our accomplishments:

• Phone book letter, working on eliminating unnecessary products that produce unnecessary waste.
• Sharing information with other groups
• Working relationship with Monroe County on increasing plastics recycling

- Met with Finger Lakes Zero Waste Coalition

- Engaging Monroe County on recycling all plastics in our county

Our Projects

• Letter to be created for the public this election time to send to their legislature representatives on more recycling
• Develop and have a major Zero Waste Program for the public
• Persistent engagement with Monroe County on recycling all plastics
• Food Composting, both individual and commercial composting
• Finding ways to get out the message about recycling to the public
• Influencing county, state, and federal regulations and enforcement of recycling laws.
• Work up recycling training for special events, like Clean Sweep
• More tours on recycling, composting, e-waste,
• Got the media to do a major public information (above the fold) article on the new electronic waste law that begins in April 1st of 2011
• Encouraging Rochester’s Project Green program to use Deconstruction of the 3,000 dwelling to be destroyed, instead of demolition.

We have a great tour of Goodwill planed. It will be on Wednesday, November 17th at 10AM – 11AM at 422 S. Clinton Street. http://www.abvi-goodwill.com/ There is a limit of 30 people, so please RSVP me if you can come. Please try and adjust your busy schedule to make this tour—it’ll be worth your time. There is parking across the street from the building. They sound very interested to meet us and talk with us on recycling so plan for a very useful tour. They have a LEED Gold building that we will see. Also, you can bring stuff to recycle: clothes, electronics (computer stuff), books (they can handle a lot of books, as they make a profit on this now), and household goods—no bigger than what you can carry.
