Big Coal to Boycott Tennessee; Let's Go to Tennessee!
Posted by: Brian F. on July 24, 2009 at 2:44PM PST

Have you seen this?

Coal miners and their employers in West Virginia are encouraging a boycott of travel to Tennessee in retaliation for Senator Lamar Alexander’s support of a federal ban on a type of mining known as mountaintop removal.

The idea for the boycott surfaced after a large group of opponents from West Virginia attended a Congressional committee hearing in late June on a bill that would forbid the pollution of streams with debris from surface mining techniques like mountaintop removal, said David Moss, director of governmental affairs for the Kentucky Coal Association.

Mr. Alexander of Tennessee is the only Republican to co-sponsor the bill, the Appalachia Restoration Act, and an official from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation testified in its favor.

So let's get this straight. A Senator tries to stop the blowing up of mountaintops and Big Coal decides to boycott said Senator's state in retaliation?

Well, there's only one thing to do. Go to Tennessee! And tell Sen. Alexander that Big Coal's boycott has inspired you to go visit. Talk about why you love the Volunteer State here. And take a look at some Tennessee trails already posted on Sierra Club Trails.

When I visited 10 years ago I remember the great music at the Opryland, the great food, and the friendly people.

Lamar Alexander's support of a ban on MTR mining in Tennessee make me MORE inclined to visit again soon. Just last month I visited friends in northeastern Tennessee--the very part of the state where MTR poses a threat--and I've been raving to friends back home about Tennessee's beauty ever since. Banning MTR will be a boon to the state's economy. Kudos to Lamar Alexander for taking a courageous stand against King Coal.

I was in Middle Tennessee earlier this month and was talking to one of my relatives who is thinking about installing a wind turbine on their property, atop a rolling hill. There ARE alternatives to coal, and I'm quite happy that people are actually thinking about using them finally.

All I know is if Big Coal says boycott Tennessee, then let's go to Tennessee!

As a University of Virginia grad, I'm trying my best to hold back on any West Virginia jokes. But it's really, really hard. I mean really.

I've sent my letter to Senator Alexander. God bless Tennessee!
