Help Gov. Sanford Find the Appalachian Trail
Posted by: SC Trails on June 25, 2009 at 11:22AM PST

Greg Haegele, the Sierra Club's deputy executive director, sent out this email message this morning:

We heard the governor of South Carolina had some trouble finding the Appalachian Trail last week.

We don't want that to happen to anyone else, so now's a perfect time to let you know about our new online community: Sierra Club Trails. Members of the community are adding trails from around the country, sharing spectacular photos, and discussing topics such as whether guns should be allowed in our national parks.

But so far only two sections of the Appalachian Trail have been added by our members. No wonder the governor got lost!

If you've hiked the Appalachian Trail, join the Sierra Club Trails community and add a stretch or two. Share your photos of the trail, too!

If you haven't hiked that trail but have other favorites, we'd love you to share them on Trails as well.

Thanks for all that you do to protect the environment.

P.S. -- Don't forget your (moral) compass.

First-time visitors: Learn more about Trails here, or watch a video tutorial of how to add a trail. Then show us your trails!

I Agree - Cheap shot.
Is this "whatever will get people's attention"?

It would be nice if more people knew more about the Appalachian Trail and less about politicians' philandering.

I love the AT! I wish everyone could hike for at least a day. For many years the hope of getting back to the trail kept me going when ill health prevented me from getting there.

All is fair in politics he lied and he tried to hide it I wonder if he even knows where the AT is in his state!

I think the SC message to help Gov Sanford find the AT is a brilliant marketing ploy! A sly dig that is rather sedate, and calls attention to the SC. Well done!

I hiked 1400 miles of the Appalachian trail way back in '71, '72, and '82. What a great experience it was!
I remember a section in Maine, around the Carry Ponds, where a disgruntled land owner obscured the trademark "white blazes" and led the unsuspecting hiker off into bogs, beaver dams, and whatnot. I think this went on for maybe 3-4 days. it seems funny now, but really frustrating then.
Oh well, I still would love to go back and finish the last 600 miles someday.
I took no camera,..too bad.
